Dylan O’Brien was born on August 26, 1991 in New York City, New York to his parents Lisa Rhodes, a former actress, and Patrick B. O’Brien, a camera operator. His mother is of English, Spanish, and Italian descent, while his father is of Irish descent. Dylan grew up in Springfield Township, New Jersey until he was twelve years old, when his family moved to Hermosa Beach, California. When he was fourteen, he began posting videos on his YouTube channel. Dylan was approached by a local director and producer about doing a web series his senior year in high school. After he graduated high school from Mira Costa High School in 2009, he considered pursuing a career in sports broadcasting at Syracuse University, wanting to work for the New York Mets; instead, he decided to pursue an acting career after meeting an actor while working on the web series who connected him to a manager.

Dylan made his acting debut on the television series “Sweety High” as Clever Trevor in 2010. The next year, he made his film debut in the comedy High Road, starring Lizzy Caplan and Ed Helms, as Jimmy. The same year, he played Charlie Brown in a short film called Charlie Brown: Blockhead’s Revenge. Dylan booked his first recurring role on the MTV television series “Teen Wolf”, playing Stiles Stilinski/Nogtisune during its six season run. Dylan had been intended to play Scott, but after reading the script, he wanted to audition for the part of Stiles instead.

He acted opposite Britt Robertson in the romantic comedy The First Time in 2012, as Dave Hodgman. In 2013, he played Peter in an episode of the television series short “First Dates with Toby Harris” before appearing on the popular television series “New Girl” as The Guy that same year. Dylan played the part of Stuart in the 2013 comedy The Internship, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. The film follows two salesmen who get an internship at Google, where they compete with young, tech-savvy geniuses to win spots for employment at the company.

The next year, the first installment of a trio of films would be released. Dylan played Thomas in The Maze Runner, based on the novels by James Dashner. The film grossed over $348 million worldwide at the box office, which helped him land on Wahoo! Movies’ 15 Breakout Stars to Watch For in 2014. Dylan’s next project would be the 2015 sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which grossed over $312 million at the box office worldwide. In 2016, he portrayed the role of Caleb Holloway in Deepwater Horizon, based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, starring Mark Walhberg and Kurt Russel.

Dylan portrayed the lead character, Mitch Rapp, in the 2017 thriller American Assassin, a film revolving around Rapp being drawn into the world of counterterrorism after the death of his girlfriend. Maze Runner: The Death Cure was released in 2018, marking the end of Dylan’s portrayal of Thomas. The film grossed $288 million worldwide at the box office. The same year, he would lend his voice for Bumblebee in the film Bumblebee, starring Hailee Steinfeld. In 2019, he returned to television with an appearance on “Weird City” as Stu Maxome in the pilot episode.

Dylan began 2020 with an appearance on the television series “Amazing Stories”, playing Sam Taylor in its pilot episode. His next film The Education of Fredrick Fitzell, in which he plays the title character, a film about Fredrick Fitzell literally and metaphorically journeys into his past after encountering someone from his past he had forgotten about. The dramatic thriller is still slated for a 2020 release.

Dylan’s upcoming projects include the film Love and Monsters, in which he plays Joel Dawson; and Heinrich Treadway in Infinite, also starring Mark Walhberg and Rupert Friend. Both films are currently in post-production and expected to bye released in 2021. He had also signed on to star alongside Viggo Mortensen in a film based on the book “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” by Joanna Malloy and John Donohue; the film is currently in pre-production and doesn’t have a running title as of yet.
