When we left Dylan O’Brien and his fellow Maze Runners at the end of movie one in Fox’s serialisation of James Dashner’s YA sci-fi series, they were… well, let’s not give it away for the sake of those yet to see the movie. Suffice to say, some have survived their first trial and are being whisked away to an uncertain future. Here, courtesy of two first-look images from the sequel, The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, is a clue as to exactly how uncertain that future is. Click on the stills for a closer look.

As the title implies, they’re not off for drinks and a spot of post-Maze downtime. Check out the weaponry. Marvel at the true grit. Imagine the industrial zone in that old C4 telly stalwart, The Crystal Maze, only presided over with demonic zeal by a psychotic Mumsy: that’s where the young cadre find themselves. It’s a hardscrabble landscape filled with horrors they must surmount as they tackle the nefarious W.C.K.D. and its superior numbers and firepower.

Alongside Thomas (O’Brien) and the mysterious Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) and Minho (Ki Hong Lee) return for the sequel, joined by newbie Jacob Lofland (Mud) and Barry Pepper, presumably joining Team W.C.K.D.. Patricia Clarkson is also back to spin her character, Ava Paige’s sinister web.

The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials lands in the UK on September 18.

In The Scorch Trials, the sequel to last year’s YA hit The Maze Runner, the action picks up immediately where the previous movie left off—with Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the survivors of that giant mechanical labyrinth discovering that the world outside their walls is far from a welcoming one.

“The first movie was the mystery of ‘Where are we and what is this place? And can we get out?’ But the second movie is about the repercussions of getting out and the discovery of what the world is actually like,” says producer Wyck Godfrey (The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars).

Based on author James Dashner’s 2010 novel, The Scorch Trials begins with the revelation that the maze and the grassy Glade at its center were constructed by the nefarious organization WCKD to train young mind-wiped survivors after a massive solar flare devastated the planet. “It has transformed the world into a desert with sand dunes that crawl and are swallowing the ruins of a lost world,” says director Wes Ball, who returned for the sequel.

When Thomas and his fellow Gladers escape the control labs of WCKD, they set off across this blighted landscape, fearing attacks from infected humans known as Cranks. “We don’t want to call them zombies, but they fit into that category,” Ball says. “They’re not undead, but they are rage-filled.”

As for the image above? “Our group runs into a lot of people out in the Scorch,” Ball says. “Some are friends, some are foes. In this case, they’ve stumbled onto the latter.”

With plenty of fans, and more than $100 million in ticket sales, last year’s The Maze Runner was a certified hit.

The film, based on James Dashner’s young adult book series, dropped a group of unsuspecting boys into a mysterious maze, where they fought (sometimes each other) to escape.

The sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, plans to blow away everything you thought you knew (unless, of course, you’ve read the books).

While “nothing can replace the maze,” says star Dylan O’Brien, who plays Thomas, they’re totally replacing the maze. The action this time centers on a lawless land called the Scorch, where the survivors try to gather more information about the WCKD, a powerful organization that’s in control of far more than they know.
Oh, and O’Brien, 23, tells PEOPLE that “there will be more female characters,” joining Kaya Scodelario, who in the first movie played Teresa, the only girl in the crew.

O’Brien is coy about divulging any more plot details, but he does promise answers for the questions raised in the original. With another two books in the series, he says, “our journey is not even close to being over.”

We all loved watching Dylan O’Brien getting chased by merciless Grievers as Thomas in “The Maze Runner” last September, but how did the “Teen Wolf” star figure out exactly which route would help him narrowly avoid death?

Fortunately, thanks to this exclusive deleted scene from the film, which will be included on the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release, we now know how Thomas got his insider Runner info. In the clip, Minho (Ki Hong Lee) gives Thomas the dirty details on the Maze itself, and fans of the film’s central romance will also be pleased to know that Teresa (Kaya Scodelario) also makes an appearance.

It’s actually a pretty nice bit of info/character work that may have gotten left out of the movie due to director Wes Ball‘s focus on amping up the action — something we found out during our in depth, spoiler-filled talk with the man from the set of the upcoming sequel “The Scorch Trials” earlier this month.

And frankly, that’s fine with us! After the initial set-up, the film version of James Dashner’s best-selling novel goes right into non-step, insane action and solving the mysteries of the Maze. Still, it’s neat (as a book fan in particular) to see a little more of the characters we know and love.

“The Maze Runner” is available now on Digital HD, and on Blu-ray and DVD on December 16!

The Maze Runner director Wes Ball has said that the YA film series won’t be following in the footsteps of The Hunger Games and Divergent by dividing its final movie into two parts.

A recent Hollywood trend – kick-started by Harry Potter and Twilight – has seen producers extend the lifespan of franchises by splitting the final source novel of a series into two separate movies.

Speaking to Digital Spy, director Ball said that James Dashner’s initial trilogy – The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure – would only be adapted into three films.

“I think three is the number; beginning, middle, end, that’s it. Four? I think there’s something off about four. For me, if I have any say in it, there’s three movies basically.

“We’re not going to [split a book in two], no way. I think three movies is the right number, Star Wars!”

Dashner has also penned Maze Runner prequel novel The Kill Order and will release follow-up The Fever Code in 2016.

A sequel to “The Maze Runner” will arrive in theaters next September, 20th Century Fox announced on the heels of the first film’s impressive debut.

The follow-up to the young adult hit, “The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials” races into theaters on Sept. 18, 2015. There’s potential for more “Maze Runners” beyond that. Author James Dashner also penned another sequel, “The Death Cure,” that could be adapted for the big screen at a future date.

“The Maze Runner” topped the weekend box office with $32.5 million domestically and pulled in an additional $37.6 million overseas. It flew past two other new wide releases, “A Walk Among the Tombstones” and “This Is Where I Leave You,” to emerge as the highest grossing film.

The sequel will face stiffer competition from action-adventure “Everest,” which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, and an untitled Whitey Bulger biopic with Johnny Depp.
